Four functional sperms and one ovum will be formed by a primary spermatocyte and a primary oocyte respectively.

  • Each primary spermatocyte goes through meiosis to give two secondary spermatocytes and each secondary spermatocyte goes through meiosis to give two spermatids, which transform into sperms. Therefore, each primary spermatocyte gives four sperms.
  • Each primary oocyte goes through meiosis to make one secondary oocyte and the first polar body. The secondary oocyte goes through meiosis to produce one ovum and the second polar body. Hence, each primary oocyte gives only one ovum.
