This is because when we talk about integers between 2 numbers, then we mean to exclude the end points(1 and 100 here)

Thus to find how many numbers there are, we just subtract the smaller number with the greater number and then subtract 1( since if we subtract them, we will still be counting the bigger number)

Like here, to find how many numbers there are, we do :

100 - 1 - 1 (bigger number - smaller number -1)
