"There are essentially 5 categories of ministers in the Central Government. They are also known as the Council of Ministers. These Ministerial Categories Include:

Prime Minister: The Prime Minister operates as the chief of the Executory wing of the Government of India and is the Chief of the Council of Ministers.

Deputy Prime Minister: The Deputy Prime Minister Generally does not carry any specific powers or Duties unless any specific department is allotted such as Home Ministry or Finance Ministry. A Deputy Prime Minister may act as Prime Minister in his absence.

Cabinet Minister: They are Members of the Cabinet of Ministers and are responsible for leading the affairs of a particular Ministry.

Minister of State: This is a junior Minister which works under the guidance of a Cabinet Minister. They are responsible for specific functions in a Ministry though the entirety of the ministry is still the responsibility of the Cabinet Minister.

Minister of state (independent): These are Ministers that are responsible for their own ministry and do not happen to be subordinate to any Cabinet Minister.
