Generally, there are two types of hydrocarbons

They are categorized on the basis of bond(s) between carbons.

1. Saturated : The carbon compound which contain single bond between them, is known as saturated hydrocarbon

Example: Alkane group

2. Unsaturated : The carbon compound which contain more than one bond i.e two or three bonds between them, is known as unsaturated hydrocarbon

Example: Alkene Or Alkyne group

----------------------------------------------

Alkane : The Saturated hydrocarbons which contains single bonds are called Alkane.

Example: C₂H₆ (ethane)

Alkene : The unsaturated hydrocarbons which contains one or double bonds are called alkenes.

Example: C₂H₄ (ethene)

Alkyne : Those containing one or more triple bonds are called Alkyne

Example: C₂H₂ (ethyne)
