The Ahom Dynastry of North East India lasted for over 600 years and resisted pressure from the Mughals to expand. In these 600 years there were at least 41 kings beginning with
Sukaphaa in 1228 and the dynasty ending with Purandar Singha in 1838 with the arrival of European power who disrupted the whole Empire.
Before the arrival of the British, Ahom people were considered separate from Indian people with a distinct culture, food and religion. Today, they number only 179,000 out of over 31 million people living in the state of Assam

The Ahom dynasty ruled the Ahom kingdom in present-day Assam for more than 600 years from 1228 AD to 1838 AD. The dynasty was established by Sukaphaa. In the rule of 610 years, there were 41 kings, who ruled the Ahom kingdom. The kings of the Ahom dynasty were called 'Assam Raja', where as the subjects of the kingdom called them 'Chaopha' (Chao means the ruler and Pha means the heaven).
The rule of this dynasty ended with the Burmese invasion of Assam and the subsequent annexation by the British East India Company following the treaty of 'Yandabo' in the year 1826. The British took control of the Ahom dynasty after this treaty.
