Detail view:
There is no hard and fast rule on how many parties are good for democracy. It depends on personal opinion and understanding, as every system has some shortcomings.
Single party system sometimes develops into Oligocracy or even Dictotorship, as happenned during Hitler and Mussoline, and now in China, North Korea, even someway in Iran. Two-party system has been widely successful in USA, as it has most important advantage that the the government continue to function for full terms. If they fail to meet the people's expectation, they can be voted out after the end of the term. However, people has not much options, as they have to either support one philosophy and functionallity, else they bound to support the other, without any alternative.
On the other hand, multiple party system existing in countries such as India, UK gives people a widest choice. The best ideology and political philophy get upper hand with the change of time. While time was there labour rules UK, with time again conservatives bouns back. Similarly In India, since Independence right wing party never ruled, which has happenned in election 2014, though earlier they share poer with centrist parties like Janata Dal in many states. However, the real problem comes in multi party system, when one party fails to get majority and post-poll aliiances never remains strong. This situation arised during 1989, 1996, 1999 elsections in India. Though during 1991, 2014 and 1009, no party could get majority, but Congress could manage the coalition government effectively. However, with the sevral differences in largest democartic country like India, it is expected that no party will get absolute majority always, due to diversity. One omore thing, so much parties may be troublesome in multi party system, so can be limited to parties which are national parties, so that number can be limited to single digit.
