• SAARC stands for South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. It is an economic and political organization of eight countries of Southern Asia.
• It was established in 1985 by the heads of the countries- Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka formally. Afghanistan later joined SAARC as the 8th member in 2007.
• The main objective of SAARC is to promote economic growth, social progress and cultural development within the South Asia region.
