Mitochondria consists of the inner and the outer membrane.
They both have different character from one another.
The inner membrane separates the mitochondrial matrix from the intermembrane space.
The outer membrane allows smaller proteins in and protein complexes to allow bigger proteins in. It works in concert with the innermembrane to allow these proteins into the matrix.
