The Constitution according to 74 Amendment Act, 1992 describes a metropolitan region in India as, a district having a population of more than 10 lakhs, which is incorporated in one or more regions and it also consists of two or more districts or other adjoining areas, designated by the Governor by government announcement to be a Metropolitan city.

Delhi ,Mumbai, Kolkatta, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Vishakhapatnam, Nagpur and Kanpur are metropolitan areas.
