How many natural numbers not exceeding 4321 can be formed with the digits 1,2,3 and 4,if the digits can repeat?

The answer is 229.I just need the steps.

hey friend..
there are certain numbers which can be form by repetition of 1,2,3&4 like-
1. 1234
2.1243
3.1342
4.4321
5.2314

As we know that there are 4 numbers so
BY MULTIPLE OF 4×4×4×4=256.
NEXT STEP IS THAT DO SQUARE OF REMAINING NUMBERS LIKE OF 3×3×2×2×1×1-1
WE DO THE MINUS BECOZ WE HAVE TO FIND PERFECT VALUE...
SO 256-3×3×2×2×1×1-1=> 219.....
