The principal quantum number n describes the energy of an electron and the size of the orbital.

Whereas, the angular momentum quantum number (Azimuthal) specifies the shape of an orbital.

The secondary quantum number divides a shell into sub-shells , a smaller group of orbitals. A letter code l represents sub-shells with specified names and numbers.

          Values of l          0     1     2     3     4     5

Names of sub-shells     s     p     d     f      g      h

The number of sub-shells depend on the mathematical value of 2l+1.

For example, the s sub-shell ‘l’ equals to 0.
