The imaginary east west horizontal lines on the earth are called as the meridians. Meridians are the arc distance between the longitudes. The meridians are generally semi circular in nature.

To be more accurate we can say that the meridians are elliptical or geoid in nature. The shape of the earth can also be termed as geoid.

The meridians are responsible for us to identify the time zones. Generally we split the time zones as anti meridian and post meridian based on the meridian.
