There are two types of routes through which Federation can be formed and these two types are:
1.Coming together Federation: the first route is coming together Federation in which Independence states come together on their own to form a bigger Union. Through combining the opportunity and retaining their identity they can increase their security.
E.g-Australia, USA and Switzerland e.t.c are included in this type of federation.
2. Holding together Federation: In this type of federation powers are divided between Union and its constituent units. The central government is more powerful as compared to state governments. Some units are also given special powers.
E.g- India, Belgium, Spain, e.t.c are some of its examples.
