Explanation:

  • Abdur Razzaq was a Sultan of Persia-Shah Rukh's ambassador sent to India. His narratives are vivid & vibrant, & include a thorough overview of the times of Vijayanagara. Yet he's been an unenthusiastic traveller. He did not like the sea & only left Herat for the Sultan in the year 1442.
  • He faced the dangers of the sea, embarked for safety in Muscat, arrived at Kariat & became seriously ill due to the heat & eventually managed to recover sufficiently to endure 18 days of sea travel to eventually land in Calicut. He was not pleased either with the Calicut natives whom he identifies as being sparsely dressed, & who practised polyandry. His stay at Calicut was restricted, as the King of Vijayanagara sent him. '
  • But he's excited here. He describes the town filled with mosques, gardens and palaces. Governed by a competent king from "Ceylon to Gulbarga" & from "Bengal to Malabar", its territories expanded. It had 300 harbours and 1,100,000 warriors.
  • He mentions him seated in a 40 pillared hall flanked by Brahmans when he met the Raja-Deva Raya II. The town was "well-fortified", and its markets were full of money. He defines Hampi 's Royal Center, & describes many rivulets or streams flowing via "cut stone channels" He said there were seven lines of forts that surrounded the city as well as its fertile hinterland and forests.
