Not specifically testing per se, but teachers should be performing ongoing assessment - both formal and informal - throughout any course. Formal testing is what you likely notice (written tests that are marked and handed back) but there will also be informal.

Throughout the year, assessment has two functions - summative and formative.

Summative, more often at the end of a year or sequence of lessons (i.e. after one topic) is there to determine a grade. You do the test, teacher calculates a grade and it gets noted down. Sometimes it goes to an exam board or similar - it is your final grade on that part of the course.

Formative is there to track progress. This is (or should be) informing the teacher’s planning as well as allowing students to spot their own weaknesses.

You can, for example, do a regular test on the topics you are studying. When teaching A level, I used to give out an exam question at the end of the week that was either to be done for homework or done in exam conditions in the lesson. I would mark these and grade that individual question as if it were a real exam - giving them an A, B, C etc grade. I could then do two things with this.

A monthly / weekly test is needed to check whether the students are practicing the syllabus or subject taught in class / tution or elsewhere .
