Without going into too much more detail, to answer your question, there is a sigma bond between every atom in benzene. There is also an addition bond called a pi bond present wherever there is a double bond. This leads to 12 sigma bonds (do not forget the hydrogens) and 3 pi bonds

In benzene there are 12 sigma bonds and 3 pi bonds. As you can see there 9 single bonds here which means they are sigma bonds. 3 are double bonds so we know that a double bond consists of one sigma and one pi bond . So when we add we get 12 sigma and 3 pi bonds
