A system of linear equations usually has a single solution, but sometimes it can have no solution (parallel lines) or infinite solutions (same line). This article reviews all three cases. One solution.

A simple equation has three cases of solutions, where it can have either a single solution, no solution, or infinite solutions.

  • A system of linear equations mostly has a single solution. We can check the following example to understand better.

        For example:  Let y=-6x+8

        and 3x+y=-4

        => y=-3x-4

        After plotting the graph they will intersect at one point, so it has a single solution.

  • A system has no solutions when the lines are parallel.

       For example, y=-3x+9

       y=-3x-7

      The slope will be -3, therefore the lines must be parallel so they have no solutions.

  • For equations that are equivalent, we will get infinite solutions.

       For example, 6x-4y=12

        3x-2y=6.

       If we multiply the second equation by 2 we will get the first equation hence they both are equivalent. In this scenario, we will get infinite solutions.
