Stereoisomers consists of both optical and geometrical isomers. So if in question it is asked the number of stereoisomers so you have to tell both optical and geometrical isomers of that compound.

You you have to check for the number of stereogenic centres which comprises of optically active carbon and the carbon showing geometrical isomerism. In above pic. you can see there is one a GI possible in that compound and have only one chiral carbon. So there are 2 stereogenic center.

After that to find no. of stereoisomers use this formula….. >2^n.

Here n is no. of stereogenic centers.

So answer is 4.
