There are 4 types of teeth in the oral cavity: Incisors – The four front teeth in both the upper and lower jaws are called incisors. Their primary function is to cut food. The two incisors on either side of the midline are known as central incisors.
In a typical human adult, there are 32 tenths or 16 pairs of teeth. One pair of teeth is the upper jaw and the other pair is the lower jaw. In a infant or baby, there are 20 teeth which are known as . They fall up, and gradually permanent teeth grows.
In mammals, there are 4 kinds of teeth:
- The long chisel shaped teeth present just in the front of the mouth and are 4 in each jaw. It means total 8 incisors are there in our mouth.
- Function - For cutting
- The sharp pointed teeth, mostly prominent in carnivores and present aside of the incisors are the canines. They are 2 in each jaw, total 4 are found in our mouth.
- Function - For tearing
- The teeth that are wider than the incisors and canines and are triangular in shape are the pre molars. They are 4 in each jaw, total 8 pre molars in our mouth.
- Function - For grinding
- They are the widest of all, and most prominent in herbivores. They are rectangular in shape.

The teeth is made up of three parts that are crown, neck and toot. The crown is the outer part exposed outside the gums. The neck is the internal part embedded in gums. The root is the part of the tooth that is inserted inside the socket of jaw bone. The Crown is made up of very hard covering called Enamel.
The teeth that appears once in a life are known as Monophyodont. Eg- Pre molars, Last molars(Wisdom teeth) . And those that appears twice are diphyodont. Eg- Incisors, Cannines and Molars. Our teeth is embedded in jaw, hence known as the coconut. There are different types of teeth, which is known to be heterodont.
