Tense is the form of a verb used to show the time of action or the state of that verb as expressed in a sentence.

It can be said there are 20 tenses altogether. It can be also said that there are just 2 kinds of tenses and the rest are their offshoots growing to 20 tenses. Then again, in another way, it can be said that there are 12 tenses in active voice and 8 tenses in passive voice together counting to 20 tenses. Yet in another way, it can be said that there are just 4 tenses each in present, past and future time in the active voice, but only 3 present tenses, 3 past tenses and 2 future tenses in the passive voice, once again grand totalling to 20 tenses.

To rid tenses of all these complexities two important issues must be borne in mind. First, tenses have to be studied with reference to time and not in isolation. Second, there are just two original tenses, simple (also called indefinite) and perfect. Then, the simple tense has its one continuous form, and the perfect tense also has its one continuous form. In this way, the two tenses grow to four tenses. Then, the same four tenses can be used in past time, the same four can be used in present time, and the same four can be used in future time. Thus, they together become - four plus four plus four - twelve tenses.

Another thing to be remembered is that there are basically two sorts of actions that are done, or continuously being done in present, past or future time by someone or something. That is to say, either we do something or something is done to us. In sentences such expressions are said to be in the active voice and the passive voice respectively, because sentences can only be said in the active voice or the passive voice.

And finally, whereas all the twelve tenses enumerated above can be said in the active voice, four of them cannot be said in the passive voice, for which reason it is reduced to eight in number.

(Simple tense / Simple Continuous Tense / Perfect Tense / Perfect Continuous tense) x (Past time / Present Time / Future Time) = 12 tenses in the Active Voice

Same as above tenses are there in the Passive Voice except four tenses (perfect continuous tense of past, present and future time plus simple continuous tense of future time) which do not exist in this voice. = 8 tenses in the Passive Voice

Altogether, A.V. + P.V. = 20 Tenses
