hi there

The mass number, of carbon is twelve. So, we can say that, carbon atom will be twelve times heavier, than a hydrogen atom. The mass number, of oxygen is 16. We can expect oxygen to be approximately, 16 times heavier than a hydrogen atom.

hope this helps u

Given:

Atom of Carbon = One

Atom of Oxygen = One

To Find:

How many times heavier is one atom of carbon than one atom of oxygen

Solution:

Calculating the Mass of both -

Mass of 6.022 X 10~ 23 atoms of carbon = 12 g

Mass of 1 atom of carbon, MC will be -

= 12/ ( 6.022 X 10~ 23 ) - Eq1

Mass of 6.022 X 10~ 23 atoms of Oxygen = 16 g

Mass of 1 atom of carbon, MC will be -

= 16/ ( 6.022 X 10~ 23 ) - Eq2

Dividing equation one by two. Thus -

Mc/Mo = 12/ ( 6.022 X 10~ 23 ) / 16/ ( 6.022 X 10~ 23 )

Mc/Mo = 12/16

Mc/Mo = 0.75

Mc = 0.75Mo

Answer: Mass of one carbon atom is 0.75 times that of an Oxygen atom.
