Given: Given compounds are methane and sulfur dioxide.

To find: We have to find the diffusion rate of methane compared to sulfur dioxide.

Solution:

According to the law of diffusion, the diffusion of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of molecular weight.

The molecular weight of methane is 16.

The molecular weight of sulfur dioxide is 64.

Let the diffusion rate of methane be x and sulfur dioxide be y.

So, we can write-

 \frac{x}{y} = \frac{ \sqrt{64} }{ \sqrt{16} } \\ \frac{x}{y} = \sqrt{4} \\ x = 2y

Thus methane will diffuse two times faster than sulfur dioxide.
