It is estimated that Indian Railways carry in excess of 1.3 billion tonnes of freight annually. The Railways cover a total length of about 69,000 kilometres (track length of about 1,21,000 kilometres) along the length and breadth of the country.

Road freight in India is estimated to be about 2.44 million tonnes per kilometre. This works out to about USD 160 million. India has the second-largest network of roads in the world. This consists of national highways, state highways and other roads.
