Human skeleton consists of two parts:

●the axial skeleton

●the appendicular skeleton

Now , coming to the question,

There are a total of twelve pairs of ribs which are long , flat and curved . So basically the thoracic vertebra at the dorsal side of the sternum and the breastbone on the ventral side under ribs on the sides together form thorax or the rib cage .

Each rib articulates with vertebra by double head and is attached to sternum by a flexible cartilage .

The first seven pairs are called true ribs , they are directly attached to the sternum the next three pairs in directly connected to the sternum are called for false ribs that is the eighth , ninth and tenth ribs .
