There are three types of cartilage: hyaline, fibrous, and elastic cartilage. Hyaline cartilage is the most widespread type and resembles glass. In the embryo, bone begins as hyaline cartilage and later ossifies.

There are basically 3 types of cartilage :

Hyaline cartilage

  • Maximum in body
  • Colour of matrix is blush.
  • Outermost covering is perichondrium.

Fibrous cartilage

  • Most flexible cartilage in our body
  • Present in pinna of ear, Tip of nose etc.

They are further classified as :

  1. Elastic cartilage
  2. White fibrous cartilage.

Calcified cartilage

  • Most modified cartilage.
  • Hardest cartilage of body.
  • Calcium salt deposited in this area.
  • Found in Humerus bone.

  • Chondroclast are cartilage destroying cells.
