Correction. There were no states in 1947.
The Concept of States In India Didn't Emerge in India till 1950 .In 1950 when all of India was divided into 29 states in 4 Parts.
Though These Division was abolished by States Reorganization act of 1956 & Subsequent Acts.
But If You Want to know about the states in 1947, the dominion of India compromised of two Types of States
British Provinces
Princely states.
At the time of independence in 1947, British India had 17 provinces:
Ajmer-Merwara
Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Assam
Baluchistan
Bengal
Bihar
Bombay
Central Provinces and Berar
Coorg
Delhi
Madras
North-West Frontier
Orissa
Panth-Piploda
Punjab
Sind
United Provinces
Upon the Partition of British India into the Dominion of India and Dominion of Pakistan,
11 provinces (Ajmer-Merwara-Kekri, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Bihar, Bombay, Central Provinces and Berar, Coorg, Delhi, Madras, Panth-Piploda, Orissa, and the United Provinces) joined India,
3 provinces (Baluchistan, North-West Frontier and Sindh) joined Pakistan,
3 (Punjab, Bengal and Assam) were partitioned between India and Pakistan.
British India Also Had 562 Princely States.
Out of Which 552 Were inside geoGraphical Boundaries Of India.
Eventually, all of the 552 joined the Republic of India.

before 1947 there were two states in India which was provinces and princely states.
