Soil is an engineering sense is a relatively loose agglomerate of mineral and organic materials and sendiments found above bedrocks .
TYPES OF SOIL
1. coarse grained soil:
- Coarse grained soil are identified on the basis of particle size , or grained size . Individual particles are visible by naked eyes.
- Coarse grained soils are divided into two groups
1 sand. 2. gravel
- particle having diameter greater than 4.75mm is called gravel and particle having diameter in between 4.75mm to 70 micron is called sand.
- when touched by hand it feels gritty .
2. Fine grained soil:
- Fine grained soil are identified on the basis of its plasticity .Individual particles are not visible by naked eyes.
- Fine grained soil are divided into two groups.
1. Silt. 2. Clay
- particle having diameter in between 75 micron to 2 micron are called silt and particle having diameter smaller than 2 micron is called clay.
- Whan touched by hand it feels smooth , greasy ,and sticky.
