Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum → They have ribosomes attached on the surface and hence are called rough endoplasmic reticulum.

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum → They don't have ribosomes attached on the surface and hence are called smooth endoplasmic reticulum.

Functions of each type -:

1. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum →

They help in the synthesis of necessary lipids and are also responsible for the production and secretion of some hormones.

They also help in the metabolism of carbohydrates and store and release calcium ions that are important for the nervous and muscular system.

2. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum →

Most functions of its function are associated with protein synthesis and they play an essential role in protein folding.

They also help in protein sorting.
