There are two types of chromosomes present in cell.

1.) Rough endoplasmic recticulum

2)Smooth endoplasmic recticulum

*Rough endoplasmic have 60's ribosomes present on its surface and it helps in the synthesis of protein

*Smooth endoplasmic recticulum helps in synthesise of lipids and streoid

Question

How many types of Endoplasmic Reticulum is present in a cell? State their functions.

Answer

There are two types of endoplasmic reticulum present in a cell. They are -:

  • Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum → They have ribosomes attached on the surface and hence are called rough endoplasmic reticulum.
  • Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum → They don't have ribosomes attached on the surface and hence are called smooth endoplasmic reticulum.

Functions of each type -:

1. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum →

  • They help in the synthesis of necessary lipids and are also responsible for the production and secretion of some hormones.
  • They also help in the metabolism of carbohydrates and store and release calcium ions that are important for the nervous and muscular system.

2. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum →

  • Most functions of its function are associated with protein synthesis and they play an essential role in protein folding.
  • They also help in protein sorting.
