There are 5 major types of roads in India:

1. Expressways:  Expressways are six or eight-lane highways which are control-accessed. It is generally used by high-speed vehicles.

2. National Highways:  National Highways are highways that connect two important states capitals or other important regions of different states like ports and tourist places. National Highways are maintained by the Central Government of India.

3. State Highways: State Highways are highways that connect important cities within a state. It also connects cities of a state with national highways. State highways are maintained by State Governments.

4. District Roads: District roads connect important markets and other places within a city and connect them with State highways. It is maintained by the Zila Parishad.

5. Rural Roads: Rural roads are common in the villages of India. These roads are generally used by the villagers and farmers to transfer goods to the market.
