Electronic configuration of Ni = [Ar] 3d8 4s2
When Ni2+ is formed 2 electrons are lost from the outermost orbitals i.e. 4s
So electronic configuration of Ni2+ = [Ar] 3d8
Now, there are 5 d-orbitals and you have to fill 8 electrons in them and then count no.of unpaired electrons ..
So first 5 electrons will be singly occupying each of the 5 3-d orbitals, then the next three will be filled forming pair in the first three orbitals.
Hence 2 electrons are left unpaired.
SO THERE ARE TWO UNPAIRED ELECTRONS IN Ni^2+ ion.
