ENIAC, the first successful US computer had 20,000 vacuum tubes. UNIVAC I, the first successful commercial system, used 5,000 tubes. Other machines like the IBM 650, 701 and 704 used a couple thousand tubes with much more of their circuitry moving to diodes, core memory and storage tubes.
