Viruses have numerous uses in today's society especially in the field of genetics. Here are some of the examples:

i)In studies:

used in genetic research to study replication and the factors involved; genes, RNA formation, transcription, translation and protein formation.

ii)Used in medicine:

-Bacteriophages, viruses that can infect and destroy bacteria, are used in therapeutic treatment to target and destroy pathogenic bacteria.

-In prevention and control of cancer- viruses used in gene therapy for delivery of useful genes in combating cancer development.

-Viruses and the viral proteins are used in the manufacture of vaccines, examples include the hepatitis B vaccine.

-In virus directed pro-drug therapy: in activation of cytotoxic drugs via enzymes when necessary.

iii)Used in agriculture:

Viruses are used as means of delivering genetic materials to organisms. This is important in creating genetically modified organisms useful in agriculture.

-viruses are also used in the control of pests.

iv)In technology:

Viruses are used in genetic engineering and as a tool for nano-technological studies as they have potential to deliver specific genetic sequence to host cells as required.
