candle. The flame melts a little puddle of wax. The liquid wax is taken up by the wick, like oil in an oil lamp, and burned. The resulting flame gives both light, and enough heat to keep the cycle going. The wax that is burned is gone, and si the candle gets shorter over time.

Candle wax that remains, and is not burned, can be made into fresh candles as long as it exists. You can take the stubs of a lot of candles and melt the wax down to make new ones.
