How many zones has the Railway System been divided into?

At present Indian Railways is divided into 17 Zones, they are:—
1) Central Railway.
2) Western Railway.
3) Eastern Railway.
4) Northern Railway.
5) Southern Railway.
6) South Central Railway.
7) North Eastern Railway.
8) South Eastern Railway.
9) North East Frontier Railway.
Till September 2002 only above 9 Zones were there. From 1st October 2002 the, then Railway Minister Ramvilas Pasvan opened
10) East Central Railway and
11) North Western Railway
And from 1st April 2003 following Zones are also opened
12) North Central Railway.
13) South Western Railway.
14) West Central Railway.
15) East Coast Railway.
16) South East Central Railway
On December 29, 2010 Metro Rail Kolkata became an Independent Zone of Indian Railways. It is declared by the then Railway Minister Ms. Mamta Benarji.
