maps are used by people in ancient days as a only way of navigation, since no compasses or GPS existed.maps are used by a variety of people, from generals planning offensives on a 1:1000000 map scale, or a commander planning on how best to attack an entrenched position. or travelers (for obvious reasons)maps were the only things available to chart uncharted territory, to make them known and understood for people to colonise,As for today, with the advance of technology, paper maps have been taken over by satellites and GPS , but maps remain useful if you're caught without your phone or in a covered place, where the efficiency of these systems are limited.in short, maps remain the cheapest and most convenient way to find out where you are.
