The Mauryan Empire disintegrated mainly because the successors of Ashoka were weak. They couldn't efficiently manage the huge expenditure on the army and the economic crisis if there was. Some historians believe Ashoka's pacifist policy was also the reason of the decline of the Mauryan Empire.
