the atomic number of silicon is 14 so hence it's configuration wud be 2,8,4

so it can either loose 4 or gain 4 so as to be stable (obtain noble gas configuration)..but but but it is not easy to gain or loose these 4 electrons..hence it most often shares it's electrons hence makes covalent bond
