In MCl2, the cation is M2+ and in MCl4 the cation is M4+. In accordance with the Fajan’s rule (Chemical bonding) ; more the charge on the cation, more is the covalent nature of the compound. Hence MCl4 is more covalent than MCl2.

Conversely MCl2 is more ionic than MCl4.

Hope that helps!

gpreet37: Do small Size of Cation favour ionic or Covalent Bond
KHUSHI12345678910: The bond formed between any two atoms is not a purely ionic bond. All bonding interactions have some covalent character because the electron density remains shared between the atoms. ... Bonds that fall in between the two extremes, having both ionic and covalent character, are classified as polar covalent bonds.

  1. here according to the presence to move the charge of the cation that is called covalent and charge on the anion then it is called ionic bond
  2. we can also determined by using the size of the atom
  3. small size is covalent and lager the size is called ionic
  4. share mcl4 is more covalent than mcl2

and the mcl2 is more ionic then the mcl4

thank i hope it will hepl u
