The microorganisms help to clean the environment by decomposition of dead and decaying organic matter.  

The organisms are recycled by the microorganisms after their death thus restoring the nutrients back to the ‘atmosphere’. It not only decomposes dead matter but also the organic waste that is created in the environment is cleaned by microbes.  

These microbes gain “energy and nutrients” by cleaning these organic waste, If they are not available then there would be no recycling in an ecosystem.
