Accessible technology is the type of computer technology that allows individuals to adapt a computer to meet their visual, auditory, dexterity, cognitive, and speech needs.   To be accessible, technology must be flexible enough to meet the individual needs and preferences of a wide variety of people with different types of abilities.

Accessible technology comprises three elements:

1 Accessibility features or configurations are incorporated into a software program to enable the adaptation and customization of product configurations to meet visual, auditory, mobility, language, and learning needs.  For example, in Windows, changing font size and color, and changing mouse pointer or mouse options are accessibility settings. Windows, Office, and Internet Explorer comprise numerous accessibility features and settings that make your computer easier to see, hear, and use.

2 Assistive technology products are specialized hardware and software products, such as screen readers or speech recognition products. Assistive technology products are carefully selected to specifically accommodate one or multiple disabilities.

3 Compatibility between assistive technology products, operating system, and software programs is critical to the proper functioning of assistive technology products.
