Answer:

Lungs can hold about six liters air, when they are fully inflated.

Explanation:

  • Respiratory volume simply indicates the amount of air that human lungs can inhale or exhale under certain conditions. It can be regarded as the lung volume.
  • An apparatus named ‘Spirometer’ for the calculation of volume of air present in the lungs.
  • There is a huge difference between lung capacity and Lung volume. The amount of air that the human lung can inhale or exhale is known as Lung volume. The absorption of two or more lung volumes gives us lung capacity.
  • Total lung capacity (TLC) is described as the absolute amount of air remaining in the lungs previous to effective inhalation of air.
  • Total lung capacity is a sum total of inspiratory reserve volume,  residual volume, expiratory reserve volume and tidal volume.
  • Total lung capacity in milliliters is around 5800 ml. We can say that the amount of air lungs can hold around six liters.
