Explanation:

The total area of Jammu & Kashmir state as it existed on August 14, 1947 is 222236 sq Kilometres. The princely state of Jammu & Kashmir under Maharaja Hari Singh wanted to remain independent but the massacre of Muslims in Jammu province by Dogra army compled Muslim tribes of North to invade and fight Maharaja’s army and liberate the state so as to join with Pakistan. Maharaja sought Indian help but India put forth the condition of accession. So he signed the instrument of accession with India. Indian army landed in Kashmir on 27 Oct, 1947 but tribal army succeeded in liberating almost half of Kashmir which was named Azad Kashmir. Later in 1963, after India-China war, China established its control over a part of J&K. A few thousand kilometers comprising Aksai Chin and a small patch near Damchok is under China’s occupation. Raksum or Shaksam Valley (about 5180 sq km) was cedded by Pakistan to China in 1963 under a border agreement.

Thus the state consists of three parts:

1-Indian controlled Kashmir (ICK): This part of Kashmir has an area of 106,567 sq. kms which is about 48% of total area of State.

2-Pakistan controlled Kashmir (PCK): Azad Kashmir and Northern areas (Gilgit & Baltistan) has an area of 78,114 sq. kms which is about 35% of the State.

3-China controlled Kashmir (CCK): Kashmir under Chinese control is 37,555 sq. kms (17%)
