Since 1990, gross U.S. greenhouse gas emissions have increased by 3.7 percent. From year to year, emissions can rise and fall due to changes in the economy, the price of fuel, and other factors. In 2018, U.S. greenhouse gas emissions increased compared to 2017 levels.
Carbon dioxide is responsible for four-fifths of the increase in warming by greenhouse gases, with concentrations in the atmosphere averaging 396 parts per million (ppm) in 2013. Last year levels increased by 2.9ppm – the largest annual increase seen from 1984 to 2013.
