To find:

Amount of heat required to convert 500 grams of water at 100°C to steam at 100°C ?

Calculation:

This is an example of change in state of water from liquid to gaseous state. This change of state requires the LATENT HEAT OF VAPOURISATION

  • Since this amount of energy is used to change the state, the temperature remains constant (at 100°C in this case)

  • Thats why it's called "Latent Heat" , because "latent" word means "hidden".

[Specific latent heat of vapourisation for water is 540 kCal/kg]

 \rm \therefore \: energy = (amount \: of \: water) \times (specific \: latent \: heat)

 \rm \implies\: energy = m\times L

 \rm \implies\: energy = \dfrac{500}{1000} \times 540

 \rm \implies\: energy = \dfrac{1}{2} \times 540

 \rm \implies\: energy = 270 \: kcal

So, the net energy required is 270 kCal.
