Let ABCD, IBFL , EFHG be a rectangles.

area of rectangle ABCD ;

= L×B

= 1×(3+1)

= 1×4

= 4 cm²

then

area of rectangle IBFL ;

= L×B

=1×5

= 5 cm²

then

area of rectangle EFHG ;

= L×B

=1×4

= 4cm²

so ,

area of shaded portion will be

= ar of ABCD + ar of IBFL + ar of EFHG

= 4 + 5 + 4

= 13 cm²

then

13 - 4 = 9 cm² ( Answer)
