How much momentum will a dum.b bell of mass 10 kg transfer to the floor if it falls from a height of 80 cm? Take its downward acceleration to be 10 m/s^2.

Answer = 40 kgm/s

Solution :

Let us first calculate the final Velocity of falling dùmb-bell (just before touching the floor)

Here,

• Initial Velocity (u) = 0

• Final Velocity (v) = ?

• Acceleration (a) = 10 m/s²

• Distance (s) = 80 cm

(or Height) = \sf\dfrac{80}{100} m

→ Height = 0.8 m

From 3rd equation of motion :

★ v² = u² + 2as

→ v² = (0)² + 2 × 10 × 0.8

→ v² = 0 + 16

→ v² = 16

→ v = √16

v = 4 m/s

Now,

★ Momentum = Mass × Velocity

→ Momentum = 10 kg × 4 m/s

→ Momentum = 40 kg m/s

\therefore Dúmb-bell will transfer an equal amount of momentum is 40 kg m/s to the floor.
