When they sell their farm produce they get paid for the quality and quantity delivered minus the costs of running the farm.
If their crops or animals are wiped out they get no money but still had the running expenses and make a loss.
In a good year they make a profit after expenses for that year and others years were their was a loss.
The bigger the farm the bigger possible profit in good times but the bigger loss in bad times.
If you are no good at saving for a rainy day ( or drought in farming, flood, plague, drop in market prices, machinery break down ) farming is not for you or any other business.
