First, you drop your attitude about your money being “hard-earned” and develop some empathy for others.
My money is also “hard-earned,” but I make charitable contributions because I support the causes and want to help the people involved. I am motivated to do this for both religious reasons and because I can empathize with others who are in need. I have been in need before and remember what that feels like.
If you belong to a religion that requires you to donate a percentage of your “hard-earned” money to charity, you donate that percentage.
If your purpose in donating to charity is to obtain a tax deduction, you donate whatever portion of your “hard-earned” money will allow you to maximize a tax deduction.
If your purpose in donating to charity is to assist those in need or to support one or more specific charitable causes, you budget and determine how much you can donate without cutting into other necessary expenditures. Then you donate that amount.
