Answer:Standard atmospheric pressure at sea level is, among other things 14.7 pounds per square inch.

What’s the average area of a human head? VERY approximately, assuming it’s rough sphere with circumference of 24 inches and taking 10% off for where the neck joins:

Area = 180 square inches

So, to answer the first part of your question, the amount of pressure on our heads is 14.7 x 180 = 2,746 pounds. About a metric tonne.

Now for the second part - why don’t we feel it?

Firstly, the pressure doesn’t just push down. It pushes equally in every direction. Think about the pressure inside a balloon, pushing equally on all of the walls. Atmospheric pressure is like this, but in reverse.

Secondly, the pressure on the inside of your head is the same as on the outside- so it’s in balance. Therefore the difference in pressure (which tends to be the thing you feel) is zero.

But go up in a plane, or on a cable car to higher altitude and you will soon feel a difference! Same coming down. Pop
